Science Ed Journals

Here you will find a list of the most important Science Education journals on a national and international scale.  I've included in the list both research based journals and practitioner journals, along with a description of each journal.

  • NSTA Journals: The National Science Teachers Association publishes four peer-reviewed journals-Science and Children (K-5), Science Scope (6-8), The Science Teacher (9-12), and Journal of College Science Teaching (12+).  These journals are practitioner-based journals that focus on the needs of classroom science teachres, science supervisors, administrators, teacher educators, and parents.
  • JCE: The Journal of Chemical Education is the official journal of the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society, co-published with the American Chemical Society Publications Division. Launched in 1924, the Journal of Chemical Education is the world’s premier chemical education journal. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles and related information as a resource to those in the field of chemical education and to those institutions that serve them. JCE typically addresses chemical content, activities, laboratory experiments, instructional methods, and pedagogies. The Journal serves as a means of communication among people across the world who are interested in the teaching and learning of chemistry. This includes instructors of chemistry from middle school through graduate school, professional staff that support these teaching activities, as well as some scientists in commerce, industry, and government.
  • JRST: The Journal of Research in Science Teaching is the official journal of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST), and it publishes reports for science education researchers and practitioners on issues of science teaching and learning and science education policy. Scholarly manuscripts within the domain of the Journal of Research in Science and Teaching include, but are not limited to, investigations employing qualitative, ethnographic, historical, survey, philosophical, or case study research approaches; position papers; policy perspectives; critical reviews of the literature; research briefs; and comments and criticism.
  • ER: Educational Researcher (ER) publishes scholarly articles that are of general significance to the education research community and that come from a wide range of areas of education research and related disciplines. ER aims to make major programmatic research and new findings of broad importance widely accessible.
  • Science: Science is a weekly, peer-reviewed journal that publishes significant original scientific research, plus reviews and analyses of current research and science policy. We welcome submissions from all fields of science and from any source.
  • IJSE: The International Journal of Science Education (IJSE) is firmly established as an authoritative voice in the world of science education. It bridges the gap between research and practice, providing information, ideas and opinion. Special emphasis is placed on applicable research relevant to educational practice, guided by educational realities in systems, schools, colleges and universities. The journal comprises empirical research papers, papers on innovations and developments, position papers, theoretical papers and letters to the editors. From time to time, a Special Issue is devoted to a topic of major interest and importance, guest-edited by an acknowledged expert.
  • JSTE: The Journal of Science Teacher Education (JSTE) is the flagship journal of the Association for Science Teacher Education. It serves as a forum for disseminating high quality research and theoretical position papers concerning the preparation and inservice education of teachers of science. The journal features pragmatic articles that offer immediate ways to improve conditions in classroom teaching and learning, professional development, and teacher recruitment and retention at all grade levels. A special section of the journal is devoted to science teacher education at the elementary level.
  • RISE: Research in Science Education is an international journal publishing and promoting scholarly science education research. The journal examines early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary, workplace, and informal learning as they relate to science education.
  • SEI: Science Education International is the quarterly journal of the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE).  ICASE was established in 1973 to extend and improve education in science for all children and youth by assisting member associations throughout the world.
